POLINE

Oxford/Sciences Po Joint Doctoral Seminar 2011

« The dynamics of Politics and Inequalities » 25-26 May 2011

Call for Abstracts : submission deadline 31 March 2011

Like last year, OXPO is sponsoring the event with the collaboration of the Sciences Po research network POLINE “The Politics of Inequalities” which gathers more than thirty researchers from over six departments at Sciences Po on topics related to inequalities.

The Joint Doctoral Seminar will give the opportunity to candidates to attend another academic event during these days at Sciences Po, an international symposium on “Inequalities in a context of global recession: Perceptions, framing and politicization”, 26-28 May 2011, Sciences Po Paris, co-organised by POLINE and Iddri (Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales).

Convenors :

The convenors of this year’s Joint Doctoral Seminar are Louis Chauvel, Nonna Mayer, and Marie Duru-Bellat from Sciences Po; Tak Wing Chan and Nancy Bermeo from Oxford.

Topic :

The theme of this year’s seminar will be “Recession, Inequalities and political consequences”.

It is open to candidates in sociology and political science. The workshop is intended to be inclusive and welcomes papers that address the topic from various angles related to the study of the impact of the present recession and inequalities (social, generational, gender or ethnicity based) on political attitudes and behavior and on public policies.

The presentations might also reflect the central topics and ongoing projects related to inequalities being undertaken by Oxford research centres such as OCSID (Oxford Centre for the Study of Inequality and Democracy), ONSIR (Oxford Network for Social Inequality Research), but also at Nuffield College, and more generally other relevant teams in the Department of Sociology and/or the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.

In parallel, there are junior and senior specialists of similar themes at Sciences Po, in OSC (Observatoire Sociologique du Changement) and CEE (Centre d’études européennes), notably around the POLINE Research Project.

How to apply :

Please send proposals to Sophie Jacquot (sophie.jacquot@sciences-po.fr) at the Centre d’études européennes at Sciences Po by March 31th, 2011.

Candidates should send an abstract of 500 words describing their research questions, data, methods, and expected findings. The propositions must fit with criteria such as excellence and proximity with the theme of the seminar.

Oxford and Sciences Po will each select 4 candidates: two in sociology and two in political science.

Seminar format :

The format will be as follows: pre-circulated papers, 20-25 minute presentations, followed by a senior discussant and a 20 minutes open discussion. English and French are allowed but presentations should be in English (students are encouraged to present a paper in English to maximise feedback from other non-French speaking students).

Seminar programme :

The programme will be available in May.

Expenses :

Presenters’ travel and accommodation expenses will be met by OXPO.

Just attending the seminar?

If you are interested in attending the workshop without presenting a paper, please contact the convenors: Nonna Mayer and Marie Duru-Bellat
