Occupational and Income Mobility in Brazil
The presentation analyses occupational and income mobility trends in Brazil. Occupational mobility is analyzed from 1973 to 2008 using five national data sets, and income mobility is analyzed for two birth cohorts, one in 1996 and another one in 2008. Evidences indicate that both types of mobility increased along the period studied. Two types of mechanism, related to the mediating role of education, explain increasing mobility: declining returns to education and the diminishment of net effect (discounting the effect of education) of parental characteristics on adult children socioeconomic standing. In addition, we present the evolution of the class structure from 1973 to 2008.
