Seminar : Ethnic Inequalities in Education in comparative perspective
At the Institut National d’études démographiques (INED)
133 boulevard Davout – 75020 Paris
Thursday November 17th, 2pm – 5.30pm
This conference presents an overview of the outcomes provided by an international research team within the EQUALSOC network*. This project has focused on educational inequalities between ‘second generation’ ethnic minorities and the majority group in a comparative perspective. The analyses cover the main European countries with a substantial second generation as well as the United States and Canada. Using both national and cross-national datasets (such as PISA), the team has produced harmonized results covering attainment at the secondary level, including both test scores during the period of compulsory schooling and completion of full secondary education. The impact of the educational system itself is also investigated through tracking (for relevant countries). This study highlights the patterns of ethnic educational inequality, how they differ both between ethnic groups and between countries, and over the educational career as a whole.
