SEMINAR INEQUALITIES AND POLITICS
Le tirage au sort et les conceptions de l’égalité
Sortition and Conceptions of Equality
Tuesday October 11, 2011
13:30 – 15:30
Sciences Po
Salle du Conseil (5th floor)
13, rue de l’Université
75007 Paris
This eigth session of the seminar “Inequalities and Politics” deals with sortition’s coming back into favour. Far from being anachronistic, this technique, in certain conditions, appears as a resort against injustice, a way to fight inequalities in politics and to fight the limits of representative democracy.
The debate will be based on the collective work edited by Gil Delannoi and Oliver Dowlen, Sortition: Theory and Practice (ed. Imprint Academic, 2010). This book explores the relationship between sortition and various aspects of democracy as well as the benefits of sortition for current political and economic practices.
Presentation : Gil DELANNOI, Directeur de recherche (Sciences Po/CEVIPOF).
Discussion : Michel HASTINGS, Professeur de science politique (Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Lille).
For an introduction to the debate in French, a report by Gil Delannoi, Le retour du tirage au sort en politique (ed. Fondapol, 2010) is available on the website at the following adress : http://blogs.sciences-po.fr/recherche-inegalites/2011/09/22/sortition-and-politics/
