This seminar session presents the main findings of the recently published book Migration, Urbanity and Cosmopolitanism in a Globalized World. This open access book bridges the gap between normative and empirical approaches to cosmopolitanism at the local scale, provides insight on the connection between cosmopolitanism and urbanity in cities and looks at migrants and mobile people as crucial actors in processes of urban changes. The authors draw a theoretically productive triangle between urban studies, theories of cosmopolitanism, and migration studies in a global context. Migration, Urbanity and Cosmopolitanism in a Globalized World provides a unique, encompassing and situated view on the various relations between cosmopolitanism and urbanity in the contemporary world. Drawing on a variety of cities in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, it overcomes the Eurocentric bias that has marked debate on cosmopolitanism from its inception. The contributions highlight the crucial role of migrants as actors of urban change and targets of urban policies, thus reconciling empirical and normative approaches to cosmopolitanism. By addressing issues such as cosmopolitanism and urban geographies of power, locations and temporalities of subaltern cosmopolites, political meanings and effects of cosmopolitan practices and discourses in urban contexts, the authors revisit contemporary debates on superdiversity, urban stratification and local incorporation, and assess the role of migration and mobility in globalization and social change.

Camille Schmoll, Director of Studies, IC Migrations, Géographie-cités, EHESS 
Camille Schmoll is a geographer, Director of Studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, a member of the Géographie-cités research lab and of the Institut Convergences Migration. She heads the Migrations Masters programme at EHESS, she is a member of the scientific committee of the upcoming permanent exhibition at the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration and co-director of the Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales alongside Olivier Clochard. In her works about migration issues in the Mediterranean area, she privileges approaches which account for gender dynamics, and spatialized realities. She has recently published Les damnées de la mer. Femmes et frontières en Méditerranée (La Découverte, 2020) and Méditerranée. Frontières à la dérive (with N. Bernardie-Tahir, Le Passager clandestin, 2018).
Hélène Thiollet, CNRS permanent researcher, SciencesPo, CERI 
Hélène Thiollet is a CNRS permanent researcher. Her research deals with the politics of migration and asylum in the Global South, and she focuses her empirical work on the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. She also works on crises and political transformations linked to migration and asylum. She teaches international relations, comparative politics and migration studies at Sciences Po and EHESS. She’s a member of the edittorial boards of the Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales, Migration Politics and PARISS (Political Anthropological Research on International Social Sciences).
