This position is designed to reinforce one of the four main research areas at the OSC. The OSC specialises in spatial dynamics, social classes and social inequalities in an urban setting. It focusses on exploring the spatial, and more particularly urban effects of general forms of stratification and social inequalities. Research also looks at what effects spatial configurations have on social relations between agents and groups in terms of practices, representations, mobilisation and regulations surrounding public policy. Apart from a sound international and general knowledge of urban sociology the following will be particularly appreciated:
• Strong interest in the study of inequalities and social relations in urban areas.
• Proven competence in quantitative analysis techniques, in cartography and more broadly in geo- referencing methods.
• Good knowledge of international comparative work.
Research
Research will be centred on several types of urban inequality relating to: income, education, housing, health, culture, the environment. Approaches based on the causes and effects of urban segregation will be of particular interest.
Familiarity with the main urban data bases and a sound knowledge of the standard nomenclatures and scales of production, dissemination and interpretation of economic, social and demographic data on towns is essential.
Experience of research in a variety of urban contexts, interest in comparative approaches, and involvement in international research networks will be an advantage. The successful candidate will have published in recognised journals.
S/he wiIl be expected to play an active role in the OSC’s collective activity: seminars, academic events, participation in research networks, answering French, European and international calls for tender.
Beyond the OSC, the research profile will also contribute to the Sciences Po’s urban programme called Cities are back in Town.
Teaching
The successful candidate will teach in Sciences Po’s undergraduate programme, and will contribute to the training and supervision of participants in the post-graduate programme in sociology (Master’s and PhD), and in the Master’s at the Ecole urbaine.
Teaching load

two courses with 24 contact hours each per year, 40 hours per year of other academic duties.

He/she will teach the sociological tradition of studies and urban ways of life and, more especially the use of statistical techniques for the spatial analysis of social data. Classes will be in French, or in English. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of English.

THE OSC
The position is based at the Observatoire sociologique du changement OSC, a joint Sciences Po-CNRS research centre (UMR 7049). The OSC focuses on the dynamics of contemporary societies using both quantitative and qualitatives methods in its work and favoring comparative approaches. Research at the centre focusses on four main themes: social stratification and inter- generational relations, the spatial dimension of inequlities, culture and ways of life, and education dynamics and policies.
The OSC is actively involved in the supervision and training of students in Sciences Po’s doctoral programme.

Auditions
Auditions will take place in Paris on June 4, 2015 from 9am.
The procedure will consist of two phases:the first of these will be open to the public and will consist of a presentation of the candidate’s reserch work, followed by a discussion with the members of the selection committee and the members of the public present; the second part wil consist of an interview with the selection committee alone.
