T. Swift – Empowering women or not so much?

We all love ourselves a little T. Swift, whether we like to admit it or not…her lyrics, in one way or another SPEAK TO US.

We’ve all cried to Tear drops on my guitar. Screamed our lungs out to Should’ve Said No. And rocked out to Holy Ground. There’s no doubt that Taylor knows how to write a hit.

Things start to get a little fuzzy, however, when all us ladies start to wonder – is Taylor representing women and girls around the world in the most positive light?

In layman’s terms, is Taylor Swift truly a feminist?

Taylor’s lyrics and music in terms of subject matter are clearly targeted towards a heterosexual audience, generally female, middle-upper class and overwhelmingly white. This in itself limits our scope in terms of feminism and to whom it applies.

It is no crime to write about who you are and what you know. We are definitely in support of people expressing themselves! But we start to wonder if Taylor’s problems revolve solely around boys and her best enemies.

It’s a tricky thing being a pop-star and sometimes you become responsible for things you may not have signed up for. But when you have hundreds and thousands of little girls screaming your lyrics, you may be responsible for a bit more than you expected…
