UCL Urban Laboratory: Two fully funded PhD studentships for ERC funded project

Professor Matthew Gandy is recruiting two PhD students for his European Research Council Advanced Grant entitled Rethinking Urban Nature. This major project, running until 2019, will involve a team of researchers, co-hosted between the Department of Geography and the UCL Urban Laboratory, exploring six intersecting themes: new approaches to urban ecology; post-humanism and different conceptions of agency; epidemiology, insect vectors and the political ecology of water; wastelands and urban bio-diversity; the role of aesthetics, landscape and “non-design” in urban space; and intersections between marginal spaces and cultural practice. The theoretical aspects to the project will be developed through a series of case studies based primarily in London, Berlin, Tallinn, and Chennai. The PhD projects might connect with existing case studies or potentially link with new localities related to the project themes. Any enquires about the project, including PhD opportunities, can be directed to Matthew Gandy at: m.gandy@ucl.ac.uk
