This position is intended to reinforce comparative and international research conducted as part of Sciences Po’s « Cities and Regions » program and to develop and coordinate courses focusing on urban issues, particularly at Master’s level. The job profile was defined by Sciences Po’s sociology department.

The department is seeking a faculty member with solid experience in research and teaching at the international level (research and teaching experience in several countries/continents). The successful applicant will be a comparative urban sociologist with possibly an interest in migration and social movements and their implications for public policy. Solid experience in coordination of teaching programs and research networks will be appreciated.

Research: The Professor will contribute to the « Cities and Regions » research program, which plans to develop comparative research on cities (in Europe and other parts of the world) and on processes of globalization, based on the themes described below.

  • Spatialization of inequalities, segregation (economic, social, educational and ethnic), and their effects on relations between social groups.
  • Governance and democracy, conflicts, mobilization and urban policies.
  • The socio-economics of cities; Institutions and economic development.
  • Social control, security, surveillance technologies, public spaces
  • Mobility, circulation and immigration
  • Risks and technologies.

A solid portfolio of publications in more than one language and a capacity to structure innovative comparative research projects are key criteria for this position.

Teaching: The successful applicant will be required to coordinate the new master  « Governing the large metropolis » to be offered as of the 2010-2011 academic year . Solid experience in teaching and supervising students is essential, since the position involves developing and supervising group projects, teaching in English and coordinating networks and projects in several countries.

The application must consist of:

–          a cover letter in English explaining reasons for applying

–          a CV in English

–          a document of some 15 pages including a presentation in English of the applicant’s most important prior research work (lines of enquiry, results, financing) and the research avenues that he/she is keen to pursue in the future.

–          five of the applicant’s most important publications

–          a copy of the PhD diploma and the report of the dissertation committee (if applicable).

The Comité de sélection (selection committee) will meet in February and will draw up a list of at most three applicants who will be invited for a research seminar as part of the city program to which the entire academic community of Sciences Po will be invited, attend an interview with members of the committee and meet with Sciences Po management and their future colleagues.

The final appointment decision will be made on completion of this procedure, end April/early May.

The successful applicant will take up the position at Sciences Po in September 2010
